The classical guitar is a type of guitar that can be played in the classical style.

The classical guitar is also called a Spanish guitar referring to its origin.

Similar instruments to what we know as the guitar has been popular for at least 5,000 years.

The guitar seems to be derived from earlier instruments known as the citharain believed to originate in central Asia.  Afterwards some other
instruments came such as the vihuela and the lute.

In the 18th century the "Spanish Guitar" became popular with the addition of the sixth string.

Dionisio Aguado, Ferdinando Carulli, Fernando Sor, Emilio Pujol, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Francisco Tarrega, Andres Segovia and Leo Brouwer are among the most famous classical guitar composers and players.
